The Theology of Safeguarding and Spiritual Abuse

The Methodist Church is strongly committed to supporting survivors of abuse of any kind and especially abuse that occurred within a church context. The Survivors’ Advisory group has worked to help the church reflect on what needs to change in its culture in order to make it a truly safe space. For more details see Survivor Resources (methodist.org.uk)

The 2021 Methodist Conference adopted the report on The Theology of Safeguarding which explores issues including the abuse of power within a
church context: See Conference 2021 Agenda Volume 2 (methodist.org.u

Being Transparent and Safe Online

Stay Safe Online for Adults

Bury St Edmunds Circuit is committed to upholding the Methodist Church's Safeguarding Policy.  This is an integral part of our life and ministry.  Safeguarding is about the action the Church takes to promote a safer culture.  Methodist Church Safeguarding Policy states: "As Christians, we are charged to love and care each other.  This is particularly true where the most vulnerable members of our community are concerned".  Our Circuit will:-

  • Promote the welfare of children, young people and adults;
  • Work to prevent abuse from occurring;
  • Seek to protect and respond well to those that have been abused.

Everyone who works with children, young people and vulnerable adults and those in several other areas of church life is expected to attend the appropriate training courses of the Methodist Church's Safeguarding Programme "Creating Safer Space".

The Circuit has a Safeguarding Officer who oversees all safeguarding needs within the churches.  Each individual church has their own Safeguarding Officer.  All safeguarding is taken seriously.
